1st Annual Fisher House Event

On March 21, 2014, TDVA attended the 1st Anniversary luncheon of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) Fisher House. The event was sponsored by Southwest Airlines who provided volunteers to host the event. Several veteran service organizations such as the Purple Heart Association, Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans, and several veterans women’s auxiliary organizations also provided assistance in setting up the luncheon event.

A barbecue styled luncheon of grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, potato salad, beans, potato chips, and a variety of cut fresh fruit and an assortment of refreshments were provided to all the guest and volunteers. Over 100 volunteers, VA hospital staff members, veterans and their families attended the event on a clear and beautiful Friday afternoon on the back patio of the Fisher House. STVHCS serves one of the largest primary care service areas in the nation and is part of the VA Heart of Texas Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 17), providing health care services for 80,000 unique Veterans. The VA Fisher House is a “home away from home” for families and patients receiving medical care within STVHCS. Veterans or active duty military personnel receiving treatment at STVHCS may stay at the Fisher House, if accompanied by a family member or caregiver. The new, 16-suite, Fisher House provides lodging, completely free of charge, for these families during their stay, playing a critical role in supporting Veterans. The South Texas VA Fisher House features a common, fully stocked kitchen, spacious dining room, inviting living room and laundry facilities. Each room has a private bathroom with a shower and all rooms are equipped with a TV.  As STVHCS continues to place families in the house, STVHCS needs to purchase, or have donations of certain items. If you’d like to help the Fisher House fill those needs, please visit 210-617-5300Ext.61672http://www.southtexas.va.gov/services/STVHCSFH. see how you can help.
